WebsiteHeather Doughty is a Canadian fine art photographer whose work explores the emotional and temporal space between subject, environment, and memory. Rooted in an early fascination with light and shadow, her photographic practice is informed by the painterly traditions of the Dutch Masters, particularly Rembrandt and Vermeer, and the conceptual legacy of Alfred Stieglitz.
Through her images, Doughty seeks to dissolve the boundary between documentation and expression, treating the photograph as both a visual record and an emotional artifact. Her work explores the passage of time and the subtle movement of the subject within both landscape and lived experience. Whether working with intentional motion, natural light, or stillness, Doughty aims to capture the emotional resonance present at the precise moment the shutter is released, inviting viewers into a contemplative dialogue with the image.
Doughty is an instructor at the Art School of Peterborough, where she shares her knowledge of photographic technique, visual storytelling, and conceptual development. She has furthered her artistic education through studies with National Geographic photographer Sam Abell, whose emphasis on composition and visual clarity continues to influence her approach.
Working across both film and digital mediums, Doughty values the tactile discipline of film while embracing the experimental possibilities of digital processes. A member of the Ontario Society of Artists, her work is often inspired by quiet natural environments and reflects an ongoing relationship with landscape, light, and the inner life of her subjects.
