Cathy Stalkie’s artistic journey began with a desire to combine her love of nature with her love of textiles. Inspired by fabric art she first encountered in the 1980’s, she began experimenting with ways to “draw” pictures using fabric. The process quickly became both exhilarating and meditative, encouraging her to continue exploring the medium.
Working with textiles since 2015, Cathy creates pieces made entirely from fabric and materials that are sewn, quilted, and raw edge fused to background material. Much of her learning has come through experimentation, along with studying the work of fellow artists through books, blogs, YouTube, and social media.
Inspired by time spent outdoors with her dog and by photographs taken by family and friends, Cathy’s work often explores the colours, moods, and atmosphere of water and sky. She finds inspiration in every season, from the subtle tones of late fall and winter to the vivid colours of spring and autumn landscapes.
