WebsiteDoug Andrews is a painter who grew up on a farm east of Peterborough, where an early fascination with the colours and patterns of nature first shaped his artistic practice. Encouraged by his mother, who was also a painter, he continued drawing from a young age despite receiving little support for his artistic interests in school.
After being accepted into the arts program at Crestwood Secondary School, Doug found the opportunity to study and create alongside other artists for the first time. He later continued his studies at the Ontario College of Art (OCA) in the late 1960s.
Life drawing, which he began studying at OCA, remains a foundation of his practice. Whether painting a studio model or countryside scene, his work is highly realistic, marked by a strong structure, rich light and shadow, and a clarity of atmosphere.
While Doug enjoys plein air sketching, the detailed nature of his finished paintings requires a slower, more patient studio process.
