Paul Chester
Multidisciplinary
Inspired by the horizons, water scenes, and rolling hills that surround his studio in southeastern Ontario, the contemporary landscapes of Paul Chester draw from the tradition of Canadian Impressionism while reflecting a modern sensibility. His paintings explore a fleeting, translucent vision of nature that is often hazy, meditative, and dream-like, presenting fragments of memory and emotion rather than depictions of specific places.
Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Chester builds the surfaces of his wood panels and canvases through many layers of paint and glaze. The physical treatment of the surface reflects both his sculptural background and his ongoing relationship with the natural world. Lines are often scratched and carved into the paint, exposing the layers beneath and adding depth and texture to the work. Luminosity remains a defining element throughout his paintings.
Chester describes his work as “restful places and retreats found in the natural landscape – country fields, flowers, forests, horizons, clouds and waterscapes.” Painted from memory, these works express the emotional experience of a moment and serve as “visual diaries; peaceful mementos celebrating beauty.”
He has participated in 38 solo and 50 group exhibitions across Canada, the United States, and London, England, and is currently represented by six galleries.
