As birds do with their nest, my process includes collecting things, going back and forth, resting, and returning to the nest. This has been my way of collaging personal and spiritual experiences, mapping the mind and navigating unknown paths.” – Em Farquhar-Barrie
Em Farquhar-Barrie (they/them) is a multi-disciplinary artist who grew up in and around Nogojiwanong/Peterborough. Living within intersecting identities, their work explores the spaces between the physical and spiritual, health and illness, community and individuality, and life and loss.
Through mixed-media landscapes, Em explores transformation and growth in both the earth and spirit world, across past, present, and future. Their process involves layering, collecting, adding, and removing materials to collage personal and spiritual experiences while navigating ideas of safety, home, and belonging.
Em is a Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from York University and holds a certificate in Cultural and Artistic Practices for Environmental and Social Justice. Their work has appeared in publications including The Shallot Magazine, Lived Collective Magazine, Crip Collab Zine, Re-Storying Autism Zine, QT Lit Mag: Flirt, and The River Magazine.
Their work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Watson & Lou, Lavender Moon, Jason Wilkins Factory, Atelier Ludmila Gallery, Gallery 1313, Sketch Working Arts, Slanted Door Gallery, York University, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
