Website“I am an Indigenous—Upper Cayuga—textile craftsperson whose work is premised on a sustainable slow-craft practice. I am a retired educator who worked in post secondary education and Indigenous health. When I had to retire early, I returned to my earlier creative training in design, photography, and custom garment creation. I always loved working with textiles from a young age, and I knew that I wanted to make things that were both beautiful and functional.
I started my textile journey as a bag maker; I was hooked after taking a bag making course. I continued taking courses in surface pattern design and textile printing, which I’ve incorporated into my bag and garment making practice. Acknowledging that the overproduction of textile goods is an environmental and social justice issue, I wanted to be a part of the solution, so my work uses organic and eco-friendly textiles, and my studio practice is focused on Zero Waste production.” – Emerance Baker
