WebsiteJames Matheson is a former art teacher and union activist. A graduate of OCA (now OCADU), he has been producing art for over 40 years. Since moving to Peterborough in 2016 he has been involved in the local art scene through gallery and café shows, and volunteering for First Friday PTBO, the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Artspace, and local schools.
“I have been making art for over 40 years and have returned to painting and drawing with renewed vigour after working in education and being involved with union activism, particularly in the area of equity. My focus is nonrepresentational work in various media. My ideas revolve around shape and line, around stasis and movement, around acumen and emotion. What I struggle towards is an art that balances opposing forces. I am currently working on a series of 12 -15 works of art (abstract, not illustrative) which start with a title as provided by local poet and essayist, Bruce Whiteman. Each title will be an excerpt from a poem, ranging in time frame from the 7th century BCE to 2017. ” – James Matheson
