WebsiteEmerance Baker is an Indigenous -Upper Cayuga- textile artist. Growing up as an Indigenous youth in a small agricultural town in Ontario, the opportunities to pursue training and a career in textile arts was out of reach. After a career in post secondary education, Emerance returned to her first love, textile arts and opened a home-based textile studio. Her work focuses on sustainable textile practices which include textile printing with ecologically crafted textile inks, natural dying and photographic image transfer on organic textiles. Physical limitations often meant not participating in juried shows, installations or galleries, so Emerance decided to focus on crafting lovely functional art, meant to be used and enjoyed daily.
Emerance Baker runs a gallery, Divine Craft, in Lakefield, Ontario, with artist Christy Haldane.
